Definitions**

Apostle: “ Apostolos” –“ Messenger, he that is sent”; a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders”

Prophet: “ Prophetes”- “ …One who, moved by the Spirit of God, and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events , and in particular such as relates to the cause and Kingdom of God and to human salvation”.

“…of men filled with the Spirit of God, who by God’s authority and command in words of weight, pleads the cause of God, and urges salvation of men…”

“…In the religious assemblies of the Christians, they were moved by the Holy Spirit to speak, having power to instruct, comfort, encourage, rebuke, convict, and stimulate , their hearers…”

Teacher: “ Didaskalos”- “ Master”; “Doctor”…” In the N.T. [ New Testament] one who teaches concerning the things of God, and the duties of man”.

“… Of those who in the religious assemblies of the Christians, undertook the work of teaching, with special assistance of the Holy Spirit”.

Master”; “Doctor”; “ Instructor”; “ One who instructs”[1], (J.Strong’s reference to William Edwy Vine, Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words)

Pastor: “Poimen”-“ A herdsman, especially a shepherd”; “ [Metaphorically]In the parable , he to whose care and control others have committed themselves, and whose precepts they follow”

“…The presiding officer, manager, director, of an assembly; so of Christ the head of the Church”

[ pertaining to “… the overseers of Christian assemblies”,[Strong’s reference to Vine]

“One who tends herds or flocks( not one who merely feeds them) is used , metaphorically, of Christian pastors ( Vine’s Expository Dictionary).”[2]

[ Many Bible teachers believe that the term “ governments “[Greek: “Kybernesis”] in 1Corinthians 12:28, has reference to the ministry of the pastor, even though the term “pastor” is not used in the verse.[ Strong’s reference to Vine here states it means: “ To guide”; “to govern”;”… steering, pilotage ( in a local church)”

[ Sandra B: All of this appears to point to the pastor ‘s ministry]

Evangelist: “Euangelistes”- “A bringer of good tidings”; “The name given to the NT [ New Testament] heralds of salvation who are not apostles”

“ A messenger of good”( “eu”, “well”; “angelos”, “ a messenger”), denotes a preacher of the Gospel(Strong’s citation of Vine’s Expository Dictionary)

**Our apologies. The system that we are using at the moment for this course does not allow for footnote citation.**

Points to Remember

-The Baptism of/with the Holy Spirit is an empowerment act that the Lord brings upon believers for service.

-The initial evidence of the baptism is speaking with tongues, or unlearned languages.

-In 3 of the 4 instances that we examined in the “Book of Acts”, in which people received the Baptism of the Spirit, the recipients spoke with other tongues; and it is

implied that they did in the 4th.

-The way that we, as believers, receive the Baptism with the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit, is by asking the Lord to baptize/fill us with his Holy Spirit.
